Sun Island
The Sun Island, also called Sun Island Park, or the Sun Island Scenic Area is located on the north bank of the Songhua River, which is surrounded by swamps. It is the only wetland scenic area located in the center of the city. The core scenic area is 15 square kilometers and covers an area of 38 square kilometers.
The external protected area is 88 square kilometers. It has been named as a "National Scenic Area", a 5A scenic spot and a State water recreation destination. It has also been granted the China Habitat Environment Award and named by the Council of the United Nations as a Model United Nations FOUN Ecological Island.
Its unique natural beauty and romantic northern European style are well known. It is home to Deer Park, Squirrels Island, Swan Lake, the Russian customs town, and the Harbin Niigata friendship garden. It is rich in foreign customs and covers an area of 90,000 square meters. It has simple, rough, natural scenery that creates a beach by the wild marshland. The newly-constructed Yu Zhixue Museum, the Russian art galleries, the North China Fine Arts Museum, Museum of Art Sun Island, Harbin Ice and Snow Culture Exhibition and the Sun Island Russian painting art exchange base for visitors brings the cultural charm of the city to visitors. Sun Island Snow Museum of Art during the hot summer can help visitors enjoy the magic of ice and snow. In summer, the region welcomes green grass and forests, blooming flowers and bird migration, feeding and breeding areas. In winter, the annual China·Harbin Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo is held in Sun Island. Many domestic and international snow sculpture competitions gather there. Activities include dog sledding, snow slide rings, snow bikes, snowmobiles and other snow activities.
