Harbin Mosque
Harbin Mosque is one of the Muslim ancient mosques in Harbin, formerly known as Harbin Muslim East Mosque and Binjiang Mosque. It was first built in 1897, renovated in 1904, and expanded again in 1935 with the initiative and donations of many Muslims. In 1998, Harbin Mosque was rated as one of the 100 model mosques in China. In 2003, the Daowai District Government once again expanded and renovated the mosque.
Harbin Mosque covers an area of 1.8 hectares, with two newly built houses attached, with a construction area of 440 square meters and an additional green area of over 3,000 square meters. It also has a 7,500 square meter commercial service center that reflects the cultural characteristics of the Muslims, providing leisure and religious activities for Harbin citizens. Currently, it is the largest mosque in Northeast China, It is also the only Arabic style building among the 1,500 mosques in China.
The supporting facilities and minaret of Harbin Mosque are designed according to Mecca, the birthplace of Islam, and the minaret of Mīqāt Dhu al-Ḥulayfah in Saudi Arabia. The tower is 50 meters high and has five floors, each with a walkway. During the day, the twin towers stand towering in the sky, solemn and sacred. At night, under the glow of the lights, the lights and towers blend seamlessly, just like the second largest temple in Saudi Arabia, the Medina Holy Temple. The current mosque receives over 300 Muslim international friends from over a dozen Arab countries, including Panama, Sudan, Malaysia, Turkey, and the Western Asian region, and receives up to 100,000 domestic Muslim friends every year. As the provincial capital, the Mosque is the main religious activity site in the vast Moslem area of Harbin. More than 20,000 people hold activities here during the three major festivals of Eid al Fitr, Eid al Adha, and Jihad.
